Special education placement is based on a complete diagnostic evaluation as specified in the New Mexico State Standards. Programs are designed to provide an individualized curriculum for each student with an identified exceptionality. 

 

The Individualized Education Program (IEP) Committee determines the amount of time and services that a student will receive. Ancillary or related services and the least restrictive environment are also discussed. Special education placement is based on each student's needs.

 

Special education support can be delivered in the following ways:

  • General education classes with monitoring of progress by special education staff.

  • General education classes with a minimal amount of special education through the monitoring and support of a staff member for less than 50% of the day with a 24 to 1 pupil/teacher ratio.

  • A moderate amount of special education service for more than 50% of the day with a 15 to 1 pupil/teacher ratio.

  • A moderate amount of special education service for more than 50% of the day with an 8 to 1 pupil/teacher ratio.

  • A combination of the above programs, as appropriate, to meet specific needs. Integrated classes will be offered, where appropriate.
