Attendance Policy & Procedures

Attendance is a cooperative effort between the parent and the school.  When the student is absent or tardy for any reason, the parent or guardian must contact the attendance office as soon as possible by calling 292-2530.  This is a 24-hour a day voice mail.

When a student has been suspended, in school at the SRC (Student Responsibility Center) or at home, the student is counted absent from his/her classes.  Absences will be reflected on the attendance record.  Parents are entitled to know where their student is at all times; therefore, attendance will be taken each period of the day.  If a student is absent and the school has not been notified, we will call the parent on the day of the absence.

Students leaving school during the day while classes are in session must sign out in the attendance office.  For safety reasons, parents will ALWAYS be asked for a picture ID when signing out his/her child.  No child will be released without the picture identification being shown.  Students arriving late to school must have parents call ahead, write a note, or accompany their child to the Attendance Office for the tardiness to be excused.  According to APS policy, out of town trips/vacations are NOT excused.

Attendance Procedures

We request that you follow these steps. These rules were put into effect for the welfare and best interests of the students.

Steps to follow to check out a student

  1. Only people listed on the registration card will be allowed to pick up a student. If you need to add a person to the card, you must do so in person (phone calls will not be accepted).

  2. You MUST have a picture ID with you. Please don't ask us to bend the rules or make exceptions - this is for the safety of your child.

  3. Be sure to come at least ten minutes early. It takes at least this amount of time to write out a pass, verify picture ID, and send for a student. A student is not allowed to wait in the office for a parent or for anyone wanting to pick them up. Again, this is for safety reasons.

Steps to follow to call in a student who is going to be late or absent

Please call the attendance line at 292-2530, ext. 1 the morning of the absence. Let the office know if your student will be absent the entire day or will just be late. Be sure to have the student's full name, ID number, grade, and reason for absence. If you need to talk to someone, the Attendance Office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Attendance Office also has a 24-hour voice mail and you can leave information on the recorder if you wish.

Requesting Homework

A child must be absent 3 days in a row before homework can be requested through the Attendance Office. The teachers then will have 24 hours to gather work for the student. Other possible ways to obtain homework: Gradebook Wizard, e-mail teachers, or have your student ask fellow classmates. Your student will have 1 day for each day missed to make up work.

Extended Absences

If you know your child will be out for a number of days, please pick up an Extended Absence/Homework Form in the attendance office at least 2 days before the absence. Parents will need to complete the form and the student must have each teacher sign it. This form asks the teachers to prepare homework for the student before they take the leave requested for the days specified. The form is to be returned to the attendance office and is used to record the absences without calling the parents each day the student is gone. The homework requested will be due when the child returns from the extended absence.

YOU MUST BE ON THE EMERGENY CONTACT LIST TO PICK A STUDENT UP FROM SCHOOL

YOU MUST ALSO SHOW A PICTURE ID TO EITHER A STUDENT AIDE OR SECRETARY
IF YOU ARE NOT ASKED TO SHOW YOUR ID, PLEASE LET THE ATTENDANCE OR COUNSELING OFFICE KNOW

You can call the attendance office before your students appointment by calling 292-2530 ext 33502.  Please leave your students name, grade, time for pick up and your name.  We can fill out the hall pass and check your ID when you arrive at EMS.  WE CANNOT HAVE STUDENTS WAITING IN THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE.  No exceptions.

Thank you
